Life

Liviu Galaction Munteanu was a Romanian Orthodox priest and theology professor at Cluj who died in the Aiud prison in 1961 under the communist regime. Born into a family of teachers and trained to a doctorate in theology, he spent his career teaching at the Theological Academy in Cluj, where he eventually served as rector.

In his later years he devoted himself to the catechesis of children and adults, drawing up an educational program that brought him to the attention of the communist Securitate. Arrested and sentenced in 1959 for "conspiracy against the social order," he was held in the Aiud and Gherla penitentiaries and died at Aiud as a result of the harsh treatment he endured.

The Romanian Orthodox Church canonized him as the Holy Priest-Martyr Liviu Galaction of Cluj, venerated as a martyr for religious education. His feast day is observed on March 8, the date of his repose, and his first official feast was celebrated at the Cathedral of Cluj-Napoca in 2025.

Teaching and Academic Life

After theological studies at the Andrei Şaguna High School in Brașov and the Theological-Pedagogical Institute in Sibiu, Munteanu obtained a doctorate in theology from the University of Cernăuți. Following his ordination in 1927, Bishop Nicolae Ivan appointed him professor at the Theological Academy in Cluj.

He spent his career in the academy's service and rose to become its rector. His pastoral and academic life converged in 1958, when, under Bishop Teofil Herineanu, he took up the work of relaunching catechesis in the Diocese of Cluj and drew up a program for teaching the faith to both children and adults.

Persecution and Martyrdom

Munteanu's catechetical program brought him to the attention of the communist Securitate. He was investigated and, in 1959, sentenced to eight years in prison for "conspiracy against the social order."

He was held in the Gherla and Aiud penitentiaries. He died at Aiud on March 8, 1961, as a result of the inhuman treatment he endured. According to the sources, he was buried in the common grave at Răpa Robilor in Aiud.

Canonization and Veneration

The arguments for his canonization were approved by the hierarchs of the Cluj Metropolis on September 27, 2021, and the Romanian Orthodox Church proceeded to glorify him among the confessors who suffered under the communist regime.

He is venerated as the Holy Priest-Martyr Liviu Galaction of Cluj and remembered as a martyr for religious education. His first official feast day was celebrated on March 8, 2025, with the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of Cluj-Napoca, served by Metropolitan Andrei of Cluj.
