Saint Sabinus, Archbishop of Cyprus
Life
Saint Sabinus was a fifth-century ascetic and hierarch of Cyprus, remembered chiefly as a disciple of Saint Epiphanius of Salamis. Drawn by the renown of Epiphanius as an ascetic, Sabinus sought him out, received the monastic tonsure at his hands, and shared in his austere way of life. The Church commemorates Sabinus on May 12, the same day on which Saint Epiphanius and the bishop Saint Polybius, another disciple of Epiphanius, are honored.
According to the synaxarion, Sabinus lived for five years in the wilderness in ascetic struggle alongside Saint Epiphanius before being raised to the episcopate in Cyprus. His life is recorded only briefly, set within the wider circle of monks and bishops gathered around Epiphanius who carried the ascetic and hierarchical tradition of the island into the generation after their teacher.
