Our Venerable Father Alexius the Recluse of the Kiev Caves

Life

Venerable Alexius the Recluse was a monastic of the Kiev Caves Monastery (Kiev Pechersk Lavra) who, according to the synaxarion, lived a life of strict asceticism in the thirteenth century. As his epithet indicates, he embraced the eremitical discipline of reclusion, withdrawing into the cave galleries to pursue prayer and self-denial apart from the wider community.

Little of his biography survives beyond this. He is numbered among the many ascetics and wonderworkers of the Caves whose incorrupt relics repose in the monastery's galleries; his own relics were discovered after the year 1675 and rest beside those of Saint Savva of the Caves.

Monastic Setting

The Kiev Caves Monastery was founded in 1051, when Venerable Anthony settled in one of the caves on the Dnieper hills. Over the following centuries it grew into one of the foremost centers of monastic life in Rus', organized around two cave systems—the Near Caves of Saint Anthony and the Far Caves of Saint Theodosius—whose galleries served the monks both as cells of seclusion and as burial places.

Within this setting the recluses of the Caves practiced an especially severe form of withdrawal, remaining enclosed in their cells for prayer. Alexius belonged to this tradition of cave-dwelling ascetics, and his memory was preserved among the monastery's saints rather than through a detailed individual life.

Relics & Commemoration

Saint Alexius's relics were uncovered after 1675 and lie beside the relics of Saint Savva of the Caves. He is commemorated individually on April 24.

He is also remembered in the collective commemorations of the Caves: the synaxarion associates him with the Synaxis of the Saints of the Far Caves of Saint Theodosius on August 28, and he is numbered among the saints honored on the Second Sunday of Great Lent in the Synaxis of all the Venerable Fathers and Wonderworkers of the Kiev Caves.

Notes

Also commemorated Aug 28 with the Synaxis of the Saints of the Far Caves.
