The Holy Martyrs Hermylus the Deacon and Stratonicus

Life

Hermylus and Stratonicus were martyrs of the early fourth century who suffered at Singidunum, the city on the Danube later known as Belgrade, during the persecution under the emperor Licinius, who reigned from 308 to 324. Their memory is kept on January 13.

By the accounts Hermylus was a deacon, a Slav by origin, who was arrested for confessing Christ and condemned by Licinius to imprisonment. Stratonicus, who was his jailer, was moved by the steadfastness of Hermylus under suffering and confessed the faith himself.

The two were martyred together about the year 315, by tradition drowned in the waters of the Danube near the city.
